Brief History of Clarksville

Clarksville is a town in the county of Mecklenburg, Virginia. Located on Kerr Lake, it is Virginia's only lakeside town. The area that is now Clarksville was once home to the Occaneechi Native Americans. As the first incorporated town of the county, it was named after Clark Royster, its founder, in 1818. By 1832, Clarksville has become one of the fastest-growing towns in the state of Virginia.

The importance of the Clarksville Tobacco Market leads to the formation of the Roanoke Navigation Company, which transported crops on the Roanoke River to the major export town Petersburg, among other areas. A plank road was also built running from Clarksville to Petersburg for land transports. The Roanoke Valley Railroad was built a couple of years later, going from Clarksville to Manson, North Carolina. By 1848, the town was a major tobacco manufacturing center and market for leaf tobacco. R. H. Moss and Brothers Factory was producing more manufactured tobacco than any other businesses in Virginia and the Carolinas.

Today, the town is the oldest tobacco market in the world to be continuously in operation. Clarksville has a total area of 2.0 square miles, according to the United States Census Bureau. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 1,139 people. 641 households and 380 families live in the town.
