Western Branch North is a community in the City of Chesapeake, Virginia. Located in the South Hampton Roads region, it is the northernmost borough of Chesapeake. The area is bordered by Bowers Hill to the south, Suffolk to the west and northwest, and Portsmouth to the east and northeast. It is also bounded by the western branch (its namesake) of the Elizabeth River to the east. Chesapeake Square Mall was opened in October of 1989. Owned and managed by Virginia-based Kotarides Holding, LLC., it was developed by Edward. J. DeBartolo Corporations. The regional mall has a 2,000-space parking lot, 70 stores and six anchors – four of which are occupied by Cinemark Theatres, Burlington, Target and JCPenney. Managed by the City of Chesapeake Department of Parks, Recreation and Tourism, the 93-acre park is open every day from dawn to dusk. Fields and facilities that are lighted are open until 11 p.m. It features five lighted multipurpose fields, half-court basketball courts, lighted pickleball courts, six lighted tennis courts, a 2-mile natural walking trail, a playground with a Max Net Climber, two picnic shelters with grills, a tree trail, a dog park with a water feature, a concession building and a restroom building. Courts are available on a first-come, first-serve basis.
