Chincoteague is a town on the island of Chincoteague. Located in the Eastern Shore region of Virginia, it can be found at the geographical coordinates of 37.9332 degrees north latitude and 75.3788 degrees west longitude. The main roads serving the area are Chincoteague Road, Main Street and Maddox Boulevard. The town is a gateway to the Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge that is situated just east of Chincoteague, on the Assateague Island.

Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge

The Chincoteague National Wildlife Refuge was founded in 1943. It encompasses over 14,000 acres of protected beaches, shrubs, dunes, saltwater marshes, freshwater areas, and maritime forests. Managed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the wildlife refuge is open daily from 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Although the park is open to the public, it is advised that those visiting the area be respectful and not disrupt any of the natural habitats.

Wildlife that can be spotted in the wildlife refuge are the endangered Atlantic coast piping plover birds, the Delmarva Fox Squirrel and the Chincoteague Ponies. Owned by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Company, the ponies are descendants of the modern-day domestic ponies. For the past 200 to 300 years, they have adapted to the hardship of living near the coastline. Today, up to 150 ponies can be grazed up by the fire company through a Special Use Permit.
