Brief History of Ashland

Ashland is the only incorporated town in Hanover County, Virginia. Named after the Lexington, Kentucky estate of Henry Clay, an Hanover County native and statesman, the town was developed as a mineral springs resort in the 1840s by the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad. Originally only one square mile when it was incorporated on February 19, 1858, Ashland has grown to be one of the largest towns in Virginia, in terms of land, with a total area of 7.16 square miles.

During the American Civil War, the racetrack that once existed during the establishment of the town was used as a training ground for Confederate troops. In 1907, the American railroad magnate and financial speculator Jay Gould developed an electrified interurban line going between Ashland and Richmond. The town was then transformed into a streetcar suburb. As of the 2010 census, it has a population of 7,225 people. The main roads serving the area are Washington Highway (U.S. Route 1), Interstate 95, Thompson Street and England Street (Virginia Route 54), Ashcake Road (Virginia Route 657).

Named after North Carolina statesman Nathaniel Macon and Virginia statesman John Randolph of Roanoke, the school was originally built in Boydton, VA.
