Over the last few years, the Southern Baptist Convention has been rocked by a series of high-profile sexual abuse allegations. In civil lawsuits and police reports, survivors of sexual abuse accuse Southern Baptist leaders of failing to protect them from dangerous predators.
Claims of sexual abuse are not uncommon in Southern Baptist congregations. Going back decades, sexual abuse advocates have criticized the Southern Baptist Convention for having no set policies on how to handle sexual abuse. The organization takes a “hands-off” approach when it comes to local churches, choosing to prize local “autonomy” over centralized authority. But many sexual abuse advocates and survivors say this focus on local church autonomy leaves dangerous sexual predators free to take advantage of unsuspecting victims.
Several high-level officials in the Southern Baptist movement have been accused of sexual abuse and molestation, but the problem seems to extend down to local congregations. One such case involves Jordan Lee Roseboom, who became a registered sex offender in 2013 after pleading guilty to six charges of child molestation. He was sentenced to three years on four of the charges, as well as three years of probation on another two charges. He was released from prison on probation in 2017, but remains a registered sex offender in Indiana.
According to Fox 59, none of the misconduct for which Roseboom was convicted took place at Rock Point Baptist Church or involved church-sanctioned events. Nonetheless, our compassionate team of sexual abuse attorneys believe that additional abuse victims may have yet to speak out. There is a possibility that Roseboom, who volunteered at Crawfordville’s Rock Point Baptist Church, may have abused children in the church congregation.
