That same year, the Angola post office was established and has been in operation since then. The city was named after Angola, New York, where some of its first settlers migrated from. It is served by Interstate 69, U.S. 20 (Maumee Street), Indiana State Road 127 ( Wayne Street), Interstate 80 and 90 (the Indiana Toll Road). As of the 2010 census, the city has a population of 8,612 people and a total area of 6.387 square miles.

Steuben County Courthouse was built from 1867 to 1868. Also located in the Angola Commercial Historic District, the two-story, rectangular, brick historic courthouse is of the Greek Revival, Romanesque Revival and Italianate architectural style. It was listed on the NRHP on May 12, 1975.
Steuben County Jail is a two-and-a-half-story brick and concrete building built in 1877. Trine University was established in 1884 as the Tri-State Normal College. Because of its location in Indiana, it is in close proximity to Michigan and Ohio. In 1906, the college was renamed Tri-State College, and then Tri-State University in 1975. In order to brand the institute as a nationally competitive private university, the "tri-state" was dropped and the school was renamed Trine University to honor alumnus Dr. Ralph Trine and his wife, Sheri. The university has been accredited by the Higher Learning Commission and the North Central Association of Colleges and Schools. It offers associate's degrees, bachelor's degrees, master's degrees and doctorates in over 50 fields of study. There are 13 active undergraduate social sororities and fraternities and more than 100 clubs and organizations. The main campus of Trine University is located in Angola.
