Brief History of Douglas

Douglas is a city within Cochise County, Arizona. The area was settled in the 1700s by the Spanish, who established Presidio de San Bernardino in 1776. In 1780, the settlement was abandoned. In the latter half of the 1800s, the United States Army created Camp San Bernardino near the former presidio. Douglas was soon founded as an American smelter town in order to treat the copper ores of nearby Bisbee, Arizona.

Incorporated in the year 1905, the town was named after the mining pioneer Dr. James Douglas. Two copper smelters – the Calumet and Arizona Company Smelter and the Copper Queen – operated in the city. In 1931, the Phelps Dodge Corporation acquired the Calumet and Arizona smelter and created the Douglas Reduction Works. Douglas was the site of the 1983 Arizona Copper Mine Strike. In 1987, the Phelps-Dodge Corporation Douglas Reduction Works closed down. However, it wasn't until 1991 when the smokestacks of the smelters were taken down.

As of the 2010 census, the population of the city is 17,378 people. Douglas is situated on the U.S.-Mexico border, near the southeastern corner of Arizona and across from Agua Prieta, Sonora. It lies within the northwest to southeast running of Sulpher Springs Valley.
