Synopsis of Green Valley

Green Valley is a census-designated place, or CDP, in the county of Pima, Arizona. Located at the geographical coordinates of 31.8556 degrees north latitude and 111.0001 degrees west longitude, it lies along the western side of the Santa Cruz River. The unincorporated retirement community consists of 59 Homeowner Associations and copper mines, like the Sierrita Mine and the Mission Mine.

As of the 2010 census, Green Valley has a population of 23,765 people and a total area of 26.3 square miles. It has three seasons.

  • From October through March, it is a warm to mild winter season with chilly nights.
  • From April through late June, it is a hot and extremely dry summer season.
  • From July through September, it is a hot and relatively humid monsoon season.

The CDP has a borderline hot semi-arid/hot desert climate.

Historic Canoa Ranch

The Raul M. Grijalva Canoa Ranch Conservation Park is a 4,800-acre historical landmark of the original San Ignacio de la Canoa Grant. Added to the National Register of Historic Places, the Historic Canoa Ranch can be found on Interstate 19 Frontage Road. The historic compound grounds are open to the public Tuesdays through Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m., but the historic buildings are only open Thursdays through Saturdays. Entry gate to access Canoa Lake, the pollinator garden, the cienega, and the Anza Trail are open seven days a week from dawn to dusk. Visitors to the park can enjoy viewing the special exhibits it displays, as well as the abundance of habitats, birds, dragonflies, and damselflies that call this place their stopping ground. Tours of the park are typically $5 and must be registered online.

Santa Rita Mountains

Just southeast of Green Valley are the Santa Rita Mountains. Located mostly within the Coronado National Forest, it is home to the Madera Canyon, one of the premier birding areas in the world. The mountain range is one of the Madrean Sky Islands – an enclave of Madrean pine-oak woodlands – and much of it lies in the Mt. Wrightson Wilderness. The Santa Rita Mountains also feature a large porphyry copper deposit and the adult male jaguar "El Jefe."
