Indian River is a neighborhood in Chesapeake, Virginia. Located at the geographical coordinates of 36.8038 degrees north latitude and 76.2349 degrees west longitude, it is within proximity of the communities of South Norfolk, West Munden, Foundation Park, Plymouth Park, Westview Village and Woodhaven. The main roads providing services to the area are Providence Road, Indian River Road, S. Military Highway (U.S. Route 13), Greenbrier Parkway, Hampton Roads Beltway (Interstate 64), and N. Battlefield Boulevard.
Part of the Chesapeake Public Schools System, Indian River High School can be found on Dunbarton Dr. in Indian River. Opened in 1967 on Old Greenbrier Road (the current Indian River Middle School facility), it was relocated to its present location in the winter of 1972. The above-average school has a total enrollment of 1,740 students from 9th through 12th grade. It has a student-to-teacher ratio of 15 to 1. Based on state test scores, 88% of its students are at least proficient in reading, and 85% are in math. Niche gives it an overall grade of a B and ranks it number 29 in the best public high schools in the Norfolk area. GreatSchools also gives it a rating of a 4.
Located at the junction of S. Military Highway and Greenbrier Parkway is the Parkview Shopping Center. On the other end of the Indian River area, at the intersection of Indian River Road and Sparrow Road, are more retail spaces. The Indian River Park stretches from Providence Road to the city line of Virginia Beach. Situated between Paramont Avenue and Rokeby Avenue, the 90-acre urban forest park is bisected by Military Highway. It offers a recreational space for visitors to come to play, relax and take in the tranquil scene. The northwest side of the park features basketball courts, a playground, picnic shelters with grills, and walking, biking and hiking trails. On the southeast side, there is a biking trail with different elevations, walking and hiking trails, a bird and nature viewing area, the Rain Garden, and one-fourth mile of the Virginia Tree Trail. Amble parking is available on both sides of the park. Also located with the Indian River Park are the Chesapeake Fire Station 3 and the Rokeby Senior Center.
